How To Hire The Right Calgary Wedding DJ

How To Hire The Right Calgary Wedding DJ

Here are some of the critical factors to keep your eye on when you are looking to book a DJ for your Calgary wedding.

Considering all vendors and all other services at your wedding, your DJ will most likely be the one to make or break your night. Hiring the wrong DJ could significantly hurt your party. Hiring the right one will ensure your guests dance the night away and every other important aspect falls into place smoothly; guests will be boasting about how much fun they had every time they see you.

How to find the right DJ

We've broken it down into 4 major areas to look out for while you search for a Calgary DJ.

  1. Promptness
  2. Accommodation
  3. Experience
  4. Cost

1. Promptness

When you contact an entertainment company, what should you expect to receive as a response and when can you expect it? For the most part, booking a DJ isn't an urgent matter; however, the way a company responds to your inquiry will often tell you a lot about how they'll handle matters the closer your wedding is as well as during your wedding.
  • If you have to wait a couple of days for a reply, what will happen if you have an urgent change a few days before your big date?
  • When you get a reply, does the company offer options and advice?
  • Do they anticipate issues you might not have even considered yet?
These are things we prioritize to help establish trust with our clients. They rely on us to get back to them quickly. There are plenty other stressful stages of planning, we don't need to be another avenue. Furthermore, we try to foresee potential issues and advise the path to resolve it. If we can't resolve it, we'll at least let you know so you can take necessary precautions.

2. Accommodation

When you narrow down the companies that effectively communicate with you, it's time to grade them on how well they customize and compromise. If it's just a one man company, it's much tougher to accommodate a client's needs.

► What if you change wedding dates? He may already be booked for that date and now you're back to square one looking for someone available.

► If there is an emergency, do they have a backup plan? Double bookings, car accidents, contracts and other factors unfortunately come in to play with a lot of companies and friends who don't take pride in their professionalism. If you're on the wrong end of that confusion, you could be stuck without an entertainer; all the money, planning and research won't do you any good since you can't make a DJ appear out of thin air.

► Can they customize packages? A few different options set it stone just won't cut it. Couples change their mind and make mistakes under all the pressure of planning a wedding. It happens and your entertainment company needs to be prepared. We anticipate these changes and do our best to get you everything you want. Of course it is your responsibility to bring this to the attention of the company as soon as you can; if you wait too long, your wants could become unobtainable.

► Have something special planned? It could be live music for your ceremony, a surprise flash mob, maybe a secret slideshow. We handle these things as if it was our own wedding because we understand how much it can mean to family and friends and the company you hire, should too.

3. Experience

The experience of the company and it's staff plays a huge role in your event. DJ'ing, public speaking, thinking on the spot and crowd control aren't something you can pickup in a day. They take time and experience to perfect and this disparity between companies can be huge. As a company encounters problems, they can make adjustments to avoid that issue in the future. Do you want to hire a company that doesn't have the experience to solve a problem? Do you want to hire a company that already knows the problems that could potentially occur before they arise?

4. Cost

What is hiring the perfect DJ going to cost? Well that's tricky to answer. There are a ton of DJ's in Calgary that all vary slightly in price - some starting as low as $500 while others prices soar past $2000. With such a wide range, how do you gauge which one is for you?

Most people aren't looking for the cheapest or the most expensive DJ. Once you've narrowed in on the price range that makes you feel comfortable, it's time to see what you get with each one.

DJ's less than $800 have a reason for being so. They could be just starting out, or maybe they don't have reliable gear or backup options, or no licensing and insurance. Whatever the case, before you book a DJ priced under $800, make sure you are okay with what you aren't getting. With a DJ over $2000, you might be paying for the advertising cost, the office space they rent, or the fancy gift basket they offer in an effort to attract your business. Do any of those things really affect the DJ's ability to provide quality entertainment? Probably not.

An average DJ should run between $900-$1500 per night depending on who you hire (this can change or be lower if you're wedding is in an off-season or on a day other than Saturday).

Couples who hire a DJ based on a referral or recommendation, know the DJ is probably pretty good, which also means others have interest in them. You may pay a premium to keep that DJ for your wedding, but that is money well spent, since you know exactly what you'll be getting.

There are more factors that go into the process, so always meet the company you're interested in, unless you know right off the hop you don't want to risk losing an available date to another client. The DJ company you hire should offer to meet with you and answer any questions. If they don't, it's not worth considering them anyways...
